Mixed Media
FALL 2025

In a motion 2 project titled "toolkit" I was given the liberty to explore an animation style that I'd been wanting to try. Being inspired by tactile design and film scratching, I decided to teach myself the tedious but highly rewarding process of mixed media animation.
I chose to chop up the band Blur's music video for "Park Life" and turn it into a short, looping Spotify Canvas. A Spotify Canvas is the short animation that plays behind a song in play mode, usually associated with the album or song itself.
This process involved taking the original music video footage, cutting it down to key parts, then reducing the frame rate to get that choppy look.
I then made a pile of contact sheets with every frame printed in order so that I could draw, cut, and manipulate each individual frame by hand. I ended up with about 160 frames for an 11 second animation.
Scanning the frames and bringing them back into AfterEffects helped retain some grit and choppiness. From there it was a simple process of piecing everything back together and making minor adjustments to help the animation flow smoothly.
